WARTIME SERVICE

Joseph F. Zakas was born March 29th 1919 and joined the United States Army on January 21st 1941 in Huntington West
Virginia at the age of 21 years old.

He served as a U.S. Army Paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division and later the 17th Airborne Division with the 505th
Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3rd Battalion, Headquarters and Headquarters Company.

His awards include: Paratrooper Badge, Combat Infantry Badge, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal and
European African and Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with three Campaign Stars.

Joseph F. Zakas died on December 31st 1998 at the age of 79.

This Insignia is hand sewn to the right sleeve of Joseph Zakas' jacket. Note that this insignia does not appear to have
had an "AIRBORNE" tab sewn above the insignia.

Note stitching where a Shoulder Sleeve Insignia (SSI) had previously been sewn. This may have been a 17th Airborne
Division SSI, as seen on one of Joseph Zakas' dress shirts. The stitched area on this jacket does not have stitching for
the "AIRBORNE" tab.
