Temporary graves were marked with a simple wooden cross with an identification plate or one of the
identification tags from the service member attached to the center. Once a permanent stone marker
could be erected, the original wooden cross would be removed and destroyed by incineration. This
identification tag or dog tag was found in Lorraine in France in 2012 at the site of the temporary marker
destruction area.
HISTORY OF FELIX A. ZYWICKI

Felix A. Zywicki was born in 1917 and enlisted on December 4th 1943 in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania.

The 318th Infantry Regiment was organized at Camp Forrest, Tennessee on July 16th 1942 and assigned
to the 80th Infantry Division. The regiment moved to the Tennessee Maneuver area on June 22nd 1943
and then to Camp Phillips, Kansas on September 7th 1943. The regiment arrived at the California-Arizona
Maneuver area on December 5th 1943 and finally Fort Dix, New Jersey on March 20th 1944. The regiment
staged at Camp Kilmer, New Jersey on June 23rd 1944 and departed from New York on July 1st 1944.
The regiment arrived in England on July 7th 1944 and landed in France on August 3rd 1944.

Private Felix A Zywicki was assigned and joined "I" Company, 3rd Battalion, 318th Infantry Regiment
from the 38th Replacement Battalion APO 318 on September 17th 1944 as a Light Machine Gunner,
Military Occupation Specialty (MOS) 604. He was killed 4 days later as "I" Company was dug in around
the town of Bezaumont, France defending the Moselle River Bridgehead. On September 27th 1944, his
status in the Company Morning Reports was changed "From duty to Missing in Action as of September
21st 1944".
He was 27 years old at the time of his death.

Temporary graves were marked with a simple wooden cross with an identification plate attached to the
center as shown in the above photo. This photo was taken behind Omaha Beach in 1951 by Life
Magazine, 6 years after World War Two at what is now known as the Normandy American Cemetery
Colleville-sur-Mer, France. Permanent stone markers were added several years later.
